Review: Gramatik Rocks A Sold Out Fillmore

Last Friday Night, the stage was set for Gramatik and friends to take stage in front of a sold out Fillmore crowd for what sure was to be a livid night filled with funkadelic dance grooves. As I stepped into the Fillmore Friday night I wasn’t too well versed in Gramatik’s music, but to say the least I was very much impressed by the Slovenian DJ’s set by night’s end.

Although like most people attending the show, this was not my first time experiencing the liveliness of a Gramatik show. Gramatik is unlike most DJ producers where he brings a unique and fresh sound to electronic music with his dynamic use of soul/funk/jazz/blues within his sets.

As the crowd began to file into the Fillmore, the night was kicked out with twenty three year old, Jenaux, a resident DJ for some of the hottest New York City clubs who has risen in the EDM world over the past couple of years. Shortly after Jenaux warmed up the crowd, Mark Farina stepped up to the decks as he changed up the vibe from progressive house to a more deep acid jazz vibe. He also brought some of his hometown sound of  Chicago House with him, which definitely got crowd vibing before Jai Wolf hit the stage.

Jai Wolf is another twenty three year old DJ who recently caught the attention of Skrillex after he remixed his track “Ease My Mind.” Now signed to OWSLA, Skrillex’s label, Jai Wolf has shown the world his beautiful rhythmic progressive sound in his remixes and his single, “Indian Summer.”  He is slated to play at Firefly Music Festival this summer and I can’t wait for round two.

Finally, the crowd was warmed up as everyone eagerly awaited for Gramatik to the stage. From the minute Gramatik hit the stage, the crowd went insane as he immediately started his set with some heavy hitting classics. As the night went on the energy inside the Fillmore was at an all time high as Gramatik fluidly mixed Hip-Hop/Dubstep/Jazz/Blues and Funk accompanied with guitar solos and funky riffs to create one spectacular set. From the moment Gramatik took control of the decks at midnight, he literally had the whole crowd jiving back and forth as they nodded their heads in sync with every beat until 2 AM. Not to mention, that the visual aspect of the show spectacularly complemented the high energy inside the Fillmore.

Finally, when the night came to an end and everyone reluctantly filed out of the venue, you could tell that everyone had a memorable experience. Although, if you happen to miss this spectacular show, you still have a chance to witness one of Gramatik’s funkadelic sets. This upcoming summer you can see him performing at Mysteryland and Camp Bisco, this time make sure you grab your tickets before they sell out!
