Thank you, Mr. Bowie

The music world has lost one of its brightest stars. David Bowie passed away at the age of 69, culminating his fight with cancer. Bowie, who released his 25th album “Blackstar” on his birthday last Friday, has affected the music industry in more ways than imaginable. He gave us hits like “Changes” and “Space Oddity” but his influence stretches throughout all genres. Whether it was showing the way for glam rock, or Puff Daddy sampling him for “Been Around the World,” Ziggy Stardust left a mark no other.

Bowie stood for so much more than his music. He was an influential figure in diversifying music videos shown on MTV during the channel’s early years, often challenging network employees to take a stand against the injustice rather than caving to consumer preferences in rural markets. Bowie certainly was an individual who did not strive to be in the limelight, even removing himself from the public eye at times during the 80’s. He made it acceptable, and inspired millions, to simply be yourself. A long list of celebrities has turned to social media to show support for the Bowie family and reminisce about their favorite memories. Thank you Mr. Bowie, you will be greatly missed.
